Yesterday, Nicholas Niki was talking about the overwork problem of salarymen in a commentary video called "The Darkness of Japan" and said:

"I always wondered why Japanese anime always depict kids and teens, but this is the reason. In Japan, the world becomes hell after high school. So the last dream they glimpsed was when they were kids."

That's what he said.

"Even in Jujutsu Kaisen, they depict teenagers as if they were adults, but that's just a fantasy. I was bullied when I was a teenager, so I don't want to go back, but most Japanese people probably do. If I were to write a story, I'd do the same. The adult world is boring crap."

It's "Shonen" Jump after all.

Exactly.
They don't get it.
Even sports are set in high school baseball or inter-high.

They're probably being sarcastic about adults watching it.
4: anonymous 2024/05/30 09:56:03 ID:0.net
Adults wandering around in a fantasy world would just be pathetic.
7: anonymous 2024/05/30 09:57:32 ID:0.net

There are plenty of such anime, though.
Recently, Dungeon Meshi has been popular overseas.
8: anonymous 2024/05/30 09:58:19 ID:0.net
Kids have infinite potential depending on their efforts.
9: anonymous 2024/05/30 09:58:35 ID:0.net
Maybe it's because people want to escape from bullying at school through manga and anime.
12: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:01:44 ID:0.net
Of course, adults with financial freedom are better.
21: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:10:42 ID:0.net
Well, the target audience is kids, after all.
23: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:15:55 ID:0.net
Maybe overseas otaku don't know because adult-oriented manga rarely gets animated.
24: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:15:59 ID:0.net
The reason why there are so many "isekai" stories is...
27: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:19:59 ID:0.net
A country with no entertainment for adults.
29: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:20:08 ID:0.net
Kids might find it hard to empathize with adult characters.
Adults can empathize with kid characters by overlaying their own childhood, so it broadens the support base.
Stories where kids can empathize with adult characters are limited, and adults at a mental level where kids can empathize are usually pathetic.
It's not a loss to cultivate kids as a purchasing demographic from a young age rather than targeting only adults with income.
30: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:20:21 ID:0.net
Ultimately, if there's going to be a battle, it's better to have young bodies.
33: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:22:47 ID:0.net
As a fan of "Kodoku no Gourmet," I wasn't wrong.
35: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:24:08 ID:0.net
The country of "Superman is awesome, I am awesome" has a different perspective.
38: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:29:10 ID:0.net
If you watch the 50s TV series "The Twilight Zone,"
it's full of adults who are despairing of society and life or who want to return to being kids.
39: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:30:47 ID:0.net
This person is still doing anime commentary, huh.
I watched their stuff during Attack on Titan.
40: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:30:58 ID:0.net
American animation like Superman or Spiderman has adult protagonists.
41: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:35:05 ID:0.net
No, I think he's hitting a very fundamental point.
It's true that there are few anime works depicting adults.
Even now, when it's normal for adults to watch anime.
42: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:36:49 ID:0.net
In Japan, it's safe and there are few child abductions,
so creative ideas can flourish, but in America...
44: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:37:11 ID:0.net
Adult-oriented manga often gets adapted into live-action.
46: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:38:06 ID:0.net
It's easier to have a single school uniform for all characters rather than thinking about different casual clothes.
54: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:44:11 ID:0.net
In the West, it's the individual versus society, but in Japan, society or the public comes first, and the individual is just a part of it.
So, coming-of-age stories for kids or young people work, but in a world where adults are just cogs in the machine, it doesn't make for interesting fiction.
That's why there are so many medical and detective dramas.
55: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:44:22 ID:0.net
I think Japan is a country with an unusually rich selection of adult-oriented manga.
56: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:44:42 ID:0.net
Old men have no room for growth.
If you're going to create a story, it's easier to write about kids who have room to grow.
60: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:47:59 ID:0.net
First and foremost, manga and anime are written for kids.
Japan has a lot of adult-oriented manga, but they get adapted into dramas, not anime.
Americans don't watch Japanese dramas.
That's all.
63: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:50:53 ID:0.net
>>60
It means Americans are only choosing to watch Japanese content aimed at kids.
65: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:54:58 ID:0.net
>>60
"So, anime fans don't want to watch adult-oriented stuff."
61: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:49:09 ID:0.net
"Kodoku no Gourmet" is just an old man eating food, but it's interesting.
62: anonymous 2024/05/30 10:49:27 ID:0.net
In tokusatsu, adults have a significant role due to the nature of the genre.
In Godzilla, kids are completely background characters.
74: anonymous 2024/05/30 11:05:07 ID:0.net
It's just that America doesn't have the culture to depict it.
78: anonymous 2024/05/30 11:08:09 ID:0.net
Even in Ultraman and Kamen Rider, the protagonists are adults.
82: anonymous 2024/05/30 11:17:56 ID:0.net
Foreigners should watch stuff like "The Fable" or "My Home Hero."
121: anonymous 2024/05/30 12:00:33 ID:0.net
>>82
"The Fable" is basically a fantasy for 15-16-year-olds who admire the underworld.
"Ushijima the Loan Shark" makes more sense; I don't know "My Home Hero."
83: anonymous 2024/05/30 11:18:03 ID:0.net
No, it's simply because it's aimed at kids, so they use characters that kids can project themselves onto.
84: anonymous 2024/05/30 11:20:30 ID:0.net
Showing "Kodoku no Gourmet" or the "Shima Kosaku" series to foreigners is pointless.
88: anonymous 2024/05/30 11:23:34 ID:0.net
There are manga that emphasize the hellish life of adults.
Like "Ushijima the Loan Shark" or "Kujo."
89: anonymous 2024/05/30 11:23:37 ID:0.net
Makoto Shinkai's works are easy to understand. Think about why they sell.
91: anonymous 2024/05/30 11:24:06 ID:0.net
Adult-oriented comics and animation overseas often involve social issues, which may have significance but are not interesting at all.
The genres are also very narrow.
101: anonymous 2024/05/30 11:34:33 ID:0.net
Either way, it's escapism, so they're just boasting about whose escapism is more sophisticated.
126: anonymous 2024/05/30 12:03:49 ID:0.net
Adult-oriented manga has started to be turned into live-action dramas.
Dramas have become image videos for actors, so there are no works that can be exported overseas.
127: anonymous 2024/05/30 12:04:38 ID:0.net
Garo-style adult-oriented works aren't even translated.
140: anonymous 2024/05/30 12:23:11 ID:0.net
All entertainment is ultimately escapism.
146: anonymous 2024/05/30 12:41:25 ID:0.net
Even in society, there are lots of people who act like kids.
148: anonymous 2024/05/30 12:44:07 ID:0.net
In Japan, there's still the pretense that anime is for kids, but it's too interesting, so adults end up watching it too.
154: anonymous 2024/05/30 12:55:48 ID:0.net
American superhero animations aren't watched by adults.
156: anonymous 2024/05/30 12:59:29 ID:0.net
>>154
There are anti-hero works like "The Boys" or "Watchmen."
Those are definitely not for kids.
167: anonymous 2024/05/30 13:14:07 ID:0.net
In Japan, live-action superhero shows have a stronger image of being for kids than anime.
174: anonymous 2024/05/30 13:22:53 ID:0.net
Just read Weekly Morning.

Such adult-oriented manga often get adapted into live-action dramas.
184: anonymous 2024/05/30 13:27:44 ID:0.net
Speaking of manga with adult protagonists:
"Golgo 13"
"Kochikame"
"Rurouni Kenshin"
"Naoki Urasawa's manga"
They just don't know these.
189: anonymous 2024/05/30 13:32:37 ID:0.net
In Japan, they often just make kid protagonists for stories that are originally meant for adults.
They probably want to make adult protagonists more, but they go with kids because it's a shonen manga.
192: anonymous 2024/05/30 13:35:24 ID:0.net
>>189
Adult protagonists don't hit as well.
It's also harder to keep things consistent, and most manga artists don't have social experience.
They don't know the world, so they can only write about kids' worlds.
191: anonymous 2024/05/30 13:34:47 ID:0.net
Even in Ghibli, "The Wind Rises" is about the adult world.
196: anonymous 2024/05/30 13:39:53 ID:0.net
Americans who love superhero stuff shouldn't be talking about society.
199: anonymous 2024/05/30 13:44:06 ID:0.net
Recently, Netflix's ranking was almost all Conan movies, which was funny.
205: anonymous 2024/05/30 13:53:29 ID:0.net
Long-running shows like Conan are watched continuously because people who were obsessed with them as kids keep watching them as adults.
245: anonymous 2024/05/30 14:38:16 ID:0.net
Comparing overseas rankings with Japanese rankings,
Japan is the only place where anime dominates the rankings.
It shows that Japanese people don't watch foreign dramas much.
271: anonymous 2024/05/30 15:07:11 ID:0.net
Kids.
And usually kids with good lineage.
Like, they turn out to be from some prestigious family or lineage.
Maybe it's because Japan's important people are often like that.
272: anonymous 2024/05/30 15:08:25 ID:0.net
I can understand wanting to reclaim a lost youth.
I've watched the American drama "Community" on Netflix multiple times.
283: anonymous 2024/05/30 15:19:51 ID:0.net
It's true that in Japanese manga and anime,
kids are often in bloody battles or training.
It makes you wonder what the adults in that world are doing.
345: anonymous 2024/05/30 17:58:42 ID:0.net
In American animation,
"King of the Hill" seems to be entertaining for Americans.
It's just old men having conversations at a BBQ.
364: anonymous 2024/05/30 18:28:43 ID:0.net

I think of "South Park."

Top people admired by elementary school students: Benesse survey

3rd: Hoshino Ai (Oshi no Ko)
6th: Shohei Ohtani
10th: Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End)

Is Frieren even considered a person?
386: anonymous 2024/05/30 19:18:09 ID:0.net
When elementary school kids admire a character, it just means they like that work.
The same goes for the ranking of dream jobs; you shouldn't take it seriously.
They won't seriously aim for those jobs.
389: anonymous 2024/05/30 19:21:13 ID:0.net
I grew up watching Harry Potter, but did we really admire Harry Potter as someone to respect?
I don't think so.

Ten years ago, the number one admiration for British elementary school kids was Hermione.
Chihiro from Miyazaki's movie was eighth.
Kids are the same everywhere.
331: anonymous 2024/05/30 16:44:07 ID:0.net
It's fine.
I don't watch anime, but I want to go back to being a kid.
340: anonymous 2024/05/30 17:42:52 ID:0.net
Hit manga get adapted into anime, and most hit manga come from shonen magazines.
Shonen magazines target teens.

That's the reason and it has nothing to do with society.
