Yuka (23, pseudonym), a company employee, has been in Tokyo for a year and looks great in a suit. One day on her way back from work, she experienced "visual harassment" from a man sitting across from her on the train who kept glancing at her.

Unnecessary gazes are a nuisance
Yuka says,
"Since that incident on the train (mentioned in the previous article), I've become uncomfortable not only on trains but also in cafes and even just passing by men on the street. Of course, I wouldn't say I'm mentally distressed, but I do think I'm becoming overly sensitive.
Since then, I've also started noticing how men look at other women. For example, I feel very uncomfortable when I see someone staring at the nape of a woman's neck on a crowded train or looking at a woman's lower body while riding up an escalator. While I believe such people are a minority, I do feel a slight mistrust towards men."

Staring at others' appearances indiscriminately is a nuisance
Yuka consulted a close male friend about these intrusive gazes. He said,
"'It's absolutely wrong to stare rudely, but it's somewhat inevitable for men to glance at beautiful women. Please forgive them,' he said. I was shocked by this. This isn't about whether it's a rude stare or a quick glance; even if there's no ill intent, it's inappropriate to look at strangers' appearances out of curiosity.
Many women, including myself, don't dress up or wear makeup to be looked at by others. While I don't think 'What gives you the right to enjoy others' appearances for free?!', I do feel uneasy about it.
Men might think they're not being noticed when they glance, but women can tell immediately. I want men to understand that many women find it unpleasant."
Of course, women might also glance at men they find attractive. However, making someone's appearance a subject of one's curiosity is a nuisance.

Calling it harassment just for looking at the person in front of you on an escalator is too much...

What are we supposed to do on train seats? Are we not allowed to look ahead? Should we just stare at our phones the whole time? My neck would get tired.

This is already at a mental illness level. Looking at men like that is also a nuisance.

This is a type of mental illness, right? Go to a hospital.

Mental illness. If you get close to people like this, you'll be affected too.

If your eyes meet, it means you're looking too.

That's the point. It's not that you're being looked at; it's that you're looking and thinking, "What's with this woman?"

This is no different from a yakuza saying, "Are you glaring at me?!"

I get that it's creepy if someone stares for several seconds, but can't you let a quick glance slide? Also, I can't accept that a "you're in my way" look counts as harassment.

If you find being looked at uncomfortable, just stay indoors. You should see a doctor before giving interviews because it seems like a mental issue.

You're mentally ill. You should go to a hospital. I recommend Tokyo Metropolitan Matsuzawa Hospital.

When you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.

I think this person is sick. When my eczema was bad, I thought everyone I passed by felt disgusted by me.

It's funny that she’s saying others shouldn't take an interest in people when she's the one judging the old man based on her own assumptions. She has a truly wicked personality.

Isn't this the type of person who later complains, "No one helped me, the world is so cold," when something happens? I know the type. They're just tightening their own noose.
